Not everybody can be a candidate for OrthoK vision improvement. But if you are nearsighted or have astigmatism, give our office a call at (805) 484-7903 because the odds are in your favor. A free consultation with Dr. Anderson will determine whether Ortho-K is right for you. In the mean time, here are some general guidelines listing the kinds of candidates who typically benefit most and qualify for OrthoK:
Persons of any age who have low to moderate amounts of myopia or astigmatism.
Children with myopia. A good candidate is a child who doesn't wish to become increasingly nearsighted every year with a parent who doesn't want to continue paying for progressively stronger lenses as the child's nearsightedness gets worse every year.
- Persons of any age who wear glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness or astigmatism.
- People who hate wearing glasses or contact lenses.
- People with active lifestyles who want the freedom of not wearing glasses or conventional contact lenses during the day.
- Anyone who wants to be free of the inconveniences of wearing glasses, spectacles or contact lenses throughout the day.
People who are resistant to laser surgery, concerned about the risks of laser eye surgery, afraid of surgery or just afraid of Lasik.
Individuals who have been unable to wear conventional contact lenses for any reason (discomfort, allergies, dryness, etc.) may be good candidates for OrthoK contact overnight lenses because OrthoK lenses are so easy to use and they are worn while you sleep. OrthoK overnight lenses greatly reduce any discomfort that may have been experienced by some individuals wearing conventional contact lenses.
- Recreational athletes and sports enthusiasts who prefer not to wear glasses or contact lenses. For example:
Golfers, skiers, cyclists, biking, scuba divers, snorkelers, hikers, campers, all-terrain and off-road vehicle and motorcycle enthusiasts.
- Rough and tumble sports and recreational activity participants who may be subject to jostling or impacts that cause them to lose their glasses or contact lenses.
- Swimmers who need to see underwater (e.g., reading depth markers) or surfers, neither of which, according to lens manufacturers, should wear contact lenses while in the water.
- Those in professions or occupations that require excellent vision without the encumbrances of wearing contacts or glasses.
Lifeguards, professional athletes, pilots, firemen, military personnel, safety professionals, police officers, etc.
- People in occupations that are hindered by the use of glasses or contacts.
- People who work in dusty or dirty environments.
- Computer users who wear contact lenses and suffer from dry eye when wearing conventional contact lenses.
